Your system is low on virtual memory
Posted October 28, 2006 – 8:12 pm in: Error Messages

Are you getting this error message on your Windows box? First and foremost make sure you have a decent amount of  physical RAM in your system. The standard these day is now 1GB. Personally on my desktop machine I have 2.5 GB of RAM.

There is also a possibility of a memory leak in your system. You can check out the virtual memory being used by going to the task bar (use ctr - alt - delte), then go to processes. If there isn’t a column called VM Size, then you can click on view -> select colums -> virtual memory on the file menu toolbar. If one of your tasks seems to be using a lot of memory, I recommend uninstalling it and seeing how things go from that point on. If things look good either reinstall the program and / or get the latest and greatest version of that program. Check the manufactures website for the latest version.

Virtual Memory is stored with a file called pagefile.sys. Usually it’s best to let Windows manage this itself. However, some users keep this on a separate drive or partition. It’s generally recommended to have this set to 1.5 times the amount of physical memory you have in your system.

Here’s how to find the Virtual Memory settings in Windows XP:

Start - > Control Panel -> System -> Advanced - > (Performance) Settings -> Advanced Tab - > (Virtual Memory) Change

If you’re not using Windows XP, please get a new computer. :)

Here is another senario to look at if all the above doesn’t help:
