Custom Dell D630 Palmrest

12 November 2007

Last week I mentioned that I’m working on a custom palmrest for my Dell notebook. What I did was purchase an extra palmrest from Dell parts so I wouldn’t mess up my original one. The reasoning behind this is that the corners on my current notebook are a little sharp and tend to dig into my wrist at times. However, I think I’m at the point now where I’m doing this more for fun than anything. I actually really like working on it, and have learned a lot about the entire process.

Here is a picture of the palmrest normally, and a picture of my modded palmrest at this point:

Keep in mind the palmrest on the right was identical to the one on the left in the beginning.

You can see how nice and rounded the corners are on the modded version to the right. I’ve been using a couple types of putty and bondo to round out the corners. At this point I’m basically trying to get imperfections out and some of the sanding lines. It would be better if I had a clean room to spray in. For example, on one of my coats a bug flew into it while it was wet. I might create a makeshift booth out of a box or something.

I’ve been using normal primer, but today I found this cool filler primer that is a little thicker and fills in scratches and little craters. So I ordered a can of that.

Here is another picture of very early in the process with one of the first coats of primer:

I’ll be sure to post some photos of it once I finish. It’s quite a long process though because in between various coats it has to dry and I simply have to wait. I’ve been reading various modding sites and forums and have picked up a lot of great techniques. To do a good job requires a lot of time and patience.
