This was an interesting error I came across today when I was trying to clone a VM.
To resolve it I did a:
service mgmt-vmware restart
on the host.
Alternatively you can also issue:
service mgmt-vmware restart
service mgmt-vpxa restart
service mgmt-vmkauthd restart
